Declutter.

While our first tip won't cost you a penny, it will cost you a little bit of elbow grease and effort. Having a good old fashioned clear out of all those broken utensils, old pans and appliances that you never use is a great way to free up space and fine-tune what you have. Perhaps you could replace the miss-matched cutlery with a new set? It's a small update that will make you feel great every time you prepare food.

Demolition.

So the effort-levels ramp up a bit here - but we promise it'll be worth it! After your clear-out, you may realise how much wasted space you have lurking in those wall cabinets. It's time to tear them down! Remove your wall cabinets and display your best kitchen accessories on open shelving instead. The result is charming and will revolutionise the way you use the space. Be sure to pick up some stylish storage jars to give your shelfie even more appeal and add trailing plants (faux or real) to breathe life into the whole look.

Lighting.

When you're on a budget, lighting can be the simple gamechanger you need to update your kitchen. Add spotlights over your working areas, such as the sink and cooker, to direct a brighter working light over these functional spaces. If you have the room then add a lamp to your work surface or a clip-on light to your shelving. It gives off a lovely warm glow and adds another layer of light which is essential for making a room feel welcoming.

Get handy with a paintbrush.

One of the most inexpensive ways of updating the look and feel of a room is to get the paintbrush out and paint your walls. If you need help deciding what colour to go for, we have tons of clever advice in our post How To Choose The Right Paint Colour For Your Home. Next up are the cupboards. If you're lucky enough to have inoffensive cupboards then you can skip this step. But if your cupboards are in need of an uplift then get those overalls back on and get painting! Our paint range with Craig & Rose is available in an eggshell finish which is great for updating kitchen cabinets.  With new handles fitted, everyone will think you've fitted a totally new kitchen fitted.

Give your tiles a facelift.

A clever tip that we spotted again on BBC2's Interior Design Masters was how easy it is to give your existing tiles a facelift. Try covering up your tiles with vinyl. This is a great tip if you rent your property and cannot make more permanent changes. Alternatively, you could get that roller out again and tackle your tiles with tile paint. Depending on just how small your budget is, you might decide to go the whole hog and completely replace your existing tiles. Just be clever and shop around for some good deals, they don't have to cost you a fortune.
