The Best Way To Style Your Sofa

Let's talk about your sofa

A sofa is usually one of the biggest pieces of furniture in the living room. When thinking about how to style a sofa, it needs  a little more thought than simply pushing it against a wall and throwing a couple of cushions on it (because also: where's the fun in that?)

Get the styling right and your sofa can anchor the entire room, creating a cohesive interiors scheme that brings together colour, texture and lighting, as well as the furniture around your sofa.

And while there are a few tried-and-tested sofa-styling principles worth knowing, we're firmly of the opinion that interiors aren't about following rules to the letter.

So, whether you're working with a sprawling three-seater, a bijou two-seater or something in between, here's how to style a sofa like a pro.

Where Should You Put Your Sofa?

Before you get anywhere near the cushions, think about where your sofa sits within the room.

The obvious choice isn't always the best one. By this, we mean that while it may feel natural to push the sofa flush against the wall in a smaller room, allowing it to 'float' within the space and arranging other furniture around it can create a much more considered arrangement.

This works particularly well in open-plan living areas, where a sofa can help define the living zone without the need for walls.

Consider your sightlines, too.

What do you see when you walk into the room?

Where does the sofa face?

And does the arrangement encourage conversation, or simply point everyone towards the TV? Trust us - there's no judgement here, and sometimes a Netflix binge-watch is just what you sofa is made for.

Just be mindful that the direction in which your sofa points is where the attention goes, and adjust accordingly!

A rug can also be helpful when you're considering how to style a sofa, particularly when it's positioned away from the walls. Ideally, at least the front legs of your sofa should sit on the rug, creating a visual connection between the furniture and anchoring the room beautifully.

Consider your lighting

Never underestimate what good lighting can do when thinking about to how to style a sofa.

Layering different sources of warm, ambient lighting will highlight its shape, colour and texture while making the whole room feel more inviting.

A floor lamp positioned beside or slightly behind the sofa creates a lovely pool of light for reading or relaxing.

A table lamp works beautifully on a side table, console or even a cabinet behind the sofa.

And if floor space is at a premium, wall lights are your secret weapon.

Position them either side of the sofa for symmetry or use a single sculptural wall light to create a more relaxed, asymmetrical look.

Introduce Your Best Supporting Acts

Your sofa might be the star of the living room, but it doesn't have to perform alone.

An accent chair is a brilliant way to introduce another colour, pattern or texture to your room.

Try a velvet chair alongside linen, a patterned chair next to a block-colour sofa, or a vintage piece alongside contemporary furniture.

What about footstools and ottomans when thinking about how to style a sofa?

Well, they're equally as useful, and can provide extra seating and even double up as a coffee table.

Then there are side tables

Position one beside the sofa for a lamp, your morning coffee and a decorative object.

The key is to create a sense of connection rather than a matching furniture suite.

Trust us: different pieces can absolutely live happily together.

No Wall Wasted

That wall behind your sofa?

Prime real estate.

One of the easiest ways to zhuzh up your living room is to treat the wall and sofa as a single composition rather than two completely separate areas.

An oversized piece of artwork can make a dramatic statement, while a gallery wall allows you to layer photography, prints, paintings and personal treasures.

Mirrors are another brilliant option.

A large mirror can reflect light and add depth, while a collection of smaller mirrors creates an eclectic focal point.

Alternatively, install shelves above the sofa and use them to display books, plants, candles, photographs and objects you've collected over time.

Our philosophy here is simply this: no wall wasted.

How To Style Sofa Cushions

The secret to great sofa cushion styling is layering

Rather than buying a matching set and lining them up like soldiers, combine different sizes, shapes, colours and textures.

Start with larger cushions towards the back, then layer smaller designs in front.

Mix patterns with block colours and tactile fabrics to create depth.

A useful formula is: pattern + block colour + texture.

For example, a bold patterned cushion alongside a rich velvet and a more understated textured design.

You can also use cushions to introduce colours from elsewhere in the room.

Pick out a shade from your artwork, rug or curtains and repeat it on the sofa to create cohesion.

And don't be afraid of contrast.

A cobalt blue cushion against a hot pink velvet sofa can look spectacular.

Coordinated?

Yes.

Matching?

Absolutely not necessary.

Throws: Draped, Folded Or Literally Thrown?

You'll be happy to hear there is no wrong answer to this question when it comes to how to style a sofa.

A throw draped over the arm of an armchair or sofa gives relaxed and effortlessly styled vibes (while also being brilliantly practical).

A throw that's neatly folded looks more polished and structured.

A throw draped over the back of your sofa provides the perfect backdrop for introducing another colour or texture.

And if your throw is literally thrown, you're speaking our language.

 You've achieved our favourite lived-in, don't-try-too-hard look.

The Finishing Touches

Once you've styled the sofa itself, look at everything around it.

A coffee table is an opportunity for books, candles, flowers and decorative objects.

A plant can soften the harder lines of furniture, while a beautiful rug brings colour and texture underfoot.

But, most importantly, leave some breathing room.

Not every surface needs to be covered and not every corner needs a decorative object.

The Final Word: Style It, Then Live In It

Styling a sofa like a pro isn't about making everything perfectly symmetrical or following a prescribed formula.

It's about understanding proportion, colour, texture and balance, then using those principles to create something that feels like you.

Layer your lighting.

Mix your furniture.

Give the wall behind your sofa some attention.

Play with pattern. Throw the throw. Add the cushion you weren't sure you needed. And then step back. If it feels a little too perfect, loosen it up. If it feels flat, add texture. If it feels like everyone else's living room, be braver.

Because the best sofas aren't simply styled for the photograph.

They're made to be lived on, lounged on, curled up on and occasionally covered in crumbs.

And frankly, that's when they look their best.

OK, maybe not the crumbs.

Although...your house, your rules!
