How To Create The Bedroom Of Your Dreams || Rockett St George

Your (Dream) Bedroom, Your Rules

Is your bedroom the best room in the house?

We think so.

Certainly, we like to style ours so they're the hardest-working rooms in the house - not in terms of productivity (that's the kitchen's job), but in how it makes you feel.

Creating your dream bedroom isn't about going for a showroom-level finish, or following random trends. It's about designing a space that feels you authentically you, whether that's energising, calm, quirky or utterly zen. What's important is that it feels unmistakably yours.

So whether you're starting from scratch or planning a bedroom refresh, these are the design principles we return to time and time again.

Because when it comes to dream bedroom inspiration, we firmly believe personality and practicality should go hand in hand.

A moodboard of different types of bedroom furniture

1. How To Choose A Bedroom Colour Scheme

Everything starts with colour.

By which we mean this: rather than following strict rules about which colours belong in a bedroom, think about how you want the space to feel

Soft neutrals can create a calm and restful backdrop, while earthy terracottas and ochres bring warmth and depth. Deep greens and inky blues are perfect for a more cocooning feel, while black adds drama and a hint of rock n' roll, especially when paired with metallic accents or a little glitterball disco fever.

Then there are those unexpected pops of colour that make a bedroom feel personal.

A punchy pink cushion. A mustard lampshade. A crimson throw. A little leopard print, naturally.

A favourite artwork, a patterned cushion or even a treasured piece of furniture can provide the starting point for an entire scheme. The key is choosing a palette that makes you happy every time you walk into the room.

2. Paint, Wallpaper... Or Both?

Who said you have to pick one?

Paint is an excellent way to create a considered backdrop, but wallpaper brings instant personality. Used together, the two can create a dream bedroom that feels layered rather than overly coordinated.

Try wallpapering the wall behind the bed to create a natural focal point, or go all in with a full-room print for a more immersive scheme.

Colour-drenching - using paint in just one shade across walls, woodwork and sometimes even the ceiling - creates a beautifully enveloping effect, particularly in deeper tones.

Alternatively, pair decorative panels of wallpaper with bold paintwork for a look that feels architectural and full of character.

3. Make The Bed The Star Of The Show

The bed is the centrepiece of your dream bedroom, so it deserves to be treated like the queen (or king) it is.

An upholstered headboard instantly adds softness and a sense of luxury, while a statement bed frame can bring architectural interest to the room.

Whichever style you choose, the aim is the same: create a bed that looks every bit as inviting as it feels.

Our go-to styling formula is simple:

  • Beautiful bedding
  • Cushions in varying sizes and textures
  • A tactile throw
  • Soft lighting on either side of the bed.

Don't be afraid to mix your cushions rather than matching them perfectly. Different patterns, colours and textures create a more collected look, particularly when they share a common colour or design detail.

The same applies to bedside tables.

Controversially, they don't have to match. Different shapes, materials or styles can add character and give an eclectic feel to your favourite room.

And bedside lighting? Well, bedside table lamps are a classic choice, but have you thought about wall lights as alternative? They're perfect if you want to free up surface space, and add an extra dimension to your bedscape - it all adds up to one beautiful focal point.

Your overall objective?

A bed that looks sensational and feels so comfortable that getting up before 11am should be made illegal.

4. Nail Your Wall Decor

Blank walls are a missed opportunity.

In fact, we think of walls as vertical space that deserves to look as beautiful as the rest of your home, and wall art is one of the easiest ways to introduce personality. An oversized statement piece can create an instant focal point, while a gallery wall allows you to bring together artwork, photography and prints that tell a more personal story.

Mirrors are another brilliant option.

They don't have to be purely functional. Decorative mirrors can act as artwork in their own right. Try a collection of smaller mirrors for a more eclectic look, or choose a large round mirror to soften a room filled with straight lines. Rectangular mirrors, meanwhile, can bring structure and definition.

Then there are shelves

A well-styled shelf can combine the decorative with the practical, creating space for books, beautiful bookends, candles, plants and treasured objects.

Cable-free lighting can also be incorporated into shelving for a warm glow without the visual distraction of wires.

The secret of creating your dream bedroom is balance.

Not every inch of wall needs to be filled, but every piece you choose should feel like it belongs.

Your walls should tell your story just as much as your furniture does.

5. How To Style Your Vanity Unit

These surfaces are often overlooked, but they offer some brilliant opportunities for dream bedroom styling.

Start with a beautiful table lamp, add a decorative tray for jewellery and a vase of fresh or faux flowers.

Vary the height, shape and texture of the objects you choose. Pair a tall, slim lamp with a slinky tray, add a sculptural ornament or introduce a little greenery to soften the arrangement.

And leave some breathing room. If every surface is completely covered, nothing stands out. A little negative space gives your favourite pieces room to shine.

6. Can You Ever Have Too Many Plants?

Not in our book.

Plants instantly soften a bedroom and bring life into the space.

A tall floor plant can fill an awkward corner, while smaller plants work beautifully on bedside tables, shelves and chests of drawers

Hanging plants add height and movement, while faux plants and flowers are perfect for darker bedrooms (or busy people with little time for watering schedules).

Plants can help break up the clean lines of furniture, add height to a room and make the overall space feel more relaxed and inviting.

And if you think you've got enough?

One more probably won't hurt.

Plants are perfect for the bedroom because they soften the hard lines of the bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers, and introduce natural elements and organic shapes.

Style them in a statement vase, place them on a shelf or use a larger plant to fill an awkward corner.

Beautiful!

7. The Perfect Finishing Touches

The smallest details are often what give a bedroom its personality.

A candle on a bedside table. A stack of books within easy reach. A beautifully textured rug beneath the bed. Beautiful storage baskets can keep everyday clutter under control, while decorative cushions and throws add softness, colour and texture.

Scent can completely change the atmosphere of a room, making scented candles and diffusers an important part of creating a space that feels genuinely restful.

The key?

Edit regularly. Your dream bedroom should evolve with you, but that doesn't mean every object you've ever owned needs to remain on display.

Your Dream Bedroom Should Look Like You

We don't mean literally (although your home, your rules...)

It's more than that the most beautiful bedrooms aren't the ones that follow every trend.

They're the ones filled with meaningful pieces that reflect a life well-lived.

Because creating your dream bedroom isn't about getting everything right

It's about creating a room that's comfortable, characterful and unmistakably yours.
