Gothic Romance is an aesthetic rooted in Gothic literature, a genre that emerged in the 18th century with Horace Walpole’s novel The Castle of Otranto, which was written in 1764.

It was widely considered to be the first Gothic novel, and introduced the brooding landscapes and complicated love stories so beloved of the genre. 

Wuthering Heights (obviously), Frankenstein, Dracula and Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca all owe a nod to Wolpole's work, and deploy dramatic backdrops of windswept moors, grand old houses, candlelit rooms, forbidden love, and dark secrets to great effect. 

These are tales steeped in inevitably tragic endings; doomed love stories that are beautiful, but with an edge.
