WALL STICKER AND STENCIL GUIDE

Wall stickers, decals, and stencils can help add personality and unique style to your interiors.

What we particularly love about wall stickers is that if you're renting, or like us, like to redecorate fairly frequently, then they can be removed without damaging your walls. In fact, Wall Stickers were one of the very first products that we ever sold at Rockett St George! More recently we also added stencils to our wall decor collection which are also the perfect interior decor game-changer and can be painted in any colour of your choosing, on the walls or the floors.

Applying wall stickers to your walls can be a little tricky, so we've tried and tested the process for you and put together our top tips to help get you started. Keep reading for your expert guide on how to apply a wall sticker to your walls followed by our guide on how to use a wall or floor stencil.

Wall Sticker Step-by-Step Guide

Wall Sticker Top Tips before you begin:

Preparation is key! When choosing the ideal place for your wall sticker we advise that you place the design against the wall with masking tape first to get a feel for the height and spacing. Wall Stickers are best used on top of plain wallpaper or smooth, clean walls. The stickers will highlight any existing cracks or imperfections so they are best used on un-textured surfaces. They can also be used on glass or furniture if varnish is applied over the top. Freshly painted walls must be dry for at least 4 weeks before applying a wall sticker.

Before application, ensure that the surface is completely clean of grease or oil and is totally dry. For wall stickers featuring text, it is a good idea to measure and check that the stickers are straight. We suggest using a spirit-level and marking the wall lightly with a pencil so that you can line the sticker up when attaching it to the wall. The Wall Stickers come positioned between two films. One thicker papery film, and one clear film. The papery white film is just a backing to protect the sticky side until it is ready for use.

Step 1:

Lay the sticker on a table, with the white film on the bottom, and the clear film facing up. Begin from a straight edge on the sticker, either the left or the right, and rub firmly around the edge to ensure that the sticker has stuck to the clear-sided film.

Step 2:

Gently begin to peel the clear film away from the papery white film. The stickers do tend to stay stuck to the white backing film, so you will need a little patience to ensure that they pull away and stick to the clear film. Take care not to tear the sticker as you go. Continue slowly peeling the clear film away from the white film, ensuring the sticker is coming away with it until the whole sticker has lifted away from the white backing and is stuck to your clear film.

Step 3:

Once left with the clear film and sticker attached, (sticky side exposed) and white film left on the table, you can now gently place the clear film with the sticker attached into the desired position on the wall with the sticky side against the wall. Step back to make sure you are completely happy with the position before pressing down too firmly on the sticker to secure it into position.

Step 4:

Once you are happy, rub the surface firmly all over and remove any air bubbles by starting at the middle and moving to the outer edges. Any air bubbles caught between the clear film and the sticker will not be a problem when you remove the clear film.

Step 5:

Repeat the process of rubbing the clear film to transfer the sticker to the wall and slowly peel the clear film away. Again, this will need some patience to ensure that the sticker stays attached to the wall and the clear film peels away. The best way to do this is to firmly hold one hand over the sticker and moving slowly along the surface as you peel back the clear film with your other hand.

Some of our wall stickers are bespoke and made to order so sadly are therefore non-refundable. Please follow our guide carefully to avoid any tears in your stickers. The wall stickers are best applied as soon as possible as the sticky quality will deteriorate over time if left in storage.

Stencil Step-by-Step Guide

Stencil Top Tips before you begin:

Much like the preparation for Wall Stickers and Decals, Stencils require a surface that is clean, dry and free from oil, grease or dust. You will need some masking tape to keep the stencil in place and a pot of your chosen paint with a small paint brush.

Step 1:

Using your tape, secure the stencil to the area that you would like to apply the pattern and step back to make sure the position is perfect before you begin painting. Here is Dee Campling following our stencil guide during our Garden Takeover collaboration.

Step 2:

Once you are happy with the position, start painting! Take care not to splodge too much paint on at once as this will leak underneath the stencil and you won't get a clean finish. You want to have an almost dry brush to start with and can build up layers of paint. Here is Dee Campling showing us how it's done...

Step 3:

And there you have it - A beautiful Stencil! Allow this to dry and coat with a sealant that is suitable for the surface you have used to keep it from fading too quickly.

You can repeat the pattern or keep it simple with a single design. Try applying to many different surfaces, such as walls, furniture, windows and ceilings. Here are a few of our favourite ideas using our Mandala Stencil...
