Why Your Wall Decor Matters More Than You Think
For us here at Rockett St George, colour isn’t just something you see. It’s something you feel.
Both the shades you surround yourself with and your wall decor have the power to influence your mood, your energy, and even your behaviour. It shows up like the feeling of calm you suddenly feel when walk into a room that's decorated with cool, tranquil shades, or the disco fever that inexplicably hits when you walk into the kitchen of your wildest friends - their black walls and disco ball decor gets the party started every time.
And yet, so many homes default to “safe” neutrals.
Shades of beige, grey and white, often chosen to keep wall decor minimalist and unoffensive. Now, we respect the 'your home, your rules' mantra as much as the next person (in fact, we may have coined the phrase), and we'd never do down anyone's home decor choices, but hear us out on this one.
Because here’s the thing: safe doesn’t always mean satisfying.
You see, we believe your home should feel as good as it looks.
And that’s where colour, and thoughtfully chosen wall decor, comes into its own. When used with intention, colour becomes one of the most powerful design tools you have.
What Is the Psychology of Colour?
In simple terms, the psychology of colour explores how different shades affect how we think and feel. It’s a concept rooted in art, design, nature, and even marketing (ever noticed how fast food logos are often red and yellow? Exactly).
Some responses to colour and colourful wall decor are universal - blue often feels calming, whereas red feels energising - but others are deeply personal. That’s why there are no hard rules here. Just guidelines.
And a gentle nudge from us (and we promise we're not anti-neutral, just pro-colour): don’t paint everything white just because you might move one day (you'd be amazed how often we hear this).
Design your home, and create your wall decor scheme, for the life you’re living now.
Reds, Oranges & Yellows
Warm colours evoke energy, warmth, and sociability, making these shades perfect for kitchen wall decor, dining rooms and anywhere you gather your gang.
Rich terracottas, burnt oranges and golden yellows bring instant vibrancy, especially when layered with wall decor in contrasting shades.
Don't be afraid to experiment - if you're not feeling a piece where you tried it first time, move or add to it!
Wall accessories styled in threes always works beautifully, and can have a transformational effect on an unloved section of wall. Think of your wall decor as a work in progress, with no pressure to get it right first time.
Blues & Greens
Blues and green are known for being calm, restorative and grounding, making them ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms and quiet corners.
Soft sage greens or deep ocean blues can create a sanctuary-like feel that encourages a feeling of calm focus, with many work spaces favouring green for this reason.
We like an inky dark blue for a wall decor choice in a snug, for example, especially when styled with bold-coloured furniture (our ochre or mustard velvet sofas and armchairs make a great match) and wall hangings.
Really, when it comes to wall decor, the only limit is your imagination.
Plump For Pinks
From soft blush tones to bold hot pinks, this is a surprisingly versatile palette.
Gentle pinks feel nurturing and calm, while brighter tones bring confidence and playfulness to your wall decor. Pink paired with green is one of our favourite colour combos because we love the fresh, energising vibe it brings to a space.
How To Use Colour (Without Overthinking It)
Start With One Colour You Love
We use the 60-30-10 rule, which is honestly this simple: create your wall decor colour scheme by using 60% main colour, 30% secondary and 10% accent.
Layer, Don’t Match
Mix tones, textures, and finishes. A perfectly matched room can feel flat, whereas layering brings it to life.
Zone Your Space
Use colour to define areas, especially in open-plan living. Different shades of wall decor bring different moods.
Colour and Personality: Make It Yours
Wall decor trends come and go, but your character is what defines you (never let your light be dimmed!) Whether you love bold, maximalist colour or prefer a more restrained palette, the key is authenticity.
Your home should reflect you - not a showroom (or your neighbour's house...)
The Rockett St George Approach
We’re all about fearless interiors.
Think coral with orange, hot pink with deep green, prints layered with texture. Used as wall decor, these combinations are expressive, playful, and unapologetically bold.
And if painting a wall feels like too much commitment?
Start with wall decor. It’s the easiest way to introduce colour, test combinations, and evolve your space over time.
Be Brave With Colour
Here’s your permission slip: colour isn’t permanent.
Wall decor is meant to evolve as you do.
So add that bold print. Hang that statement piece. Introduce a shade you’ve always loved but never dared to try.
Because the right colour doesn’t just change how your room looks.
It changes the energy, and how you feel in it.
In short? Colour changes everything.
