So - the conventional rule of thumb for table lamps is that your lampshade should be roughly one-third of the height of your lamp base and that the bottom of the lampshade should be wider than the base of the lamp, sitting comfortably without overwhelming it. HOWEVER. If you look at the table lamps in our collection, you'll see that many of them don't actually confirm to this rule (naughty). What they do have in common, though, is that the lampshades are proportional to the base - the dimensions work because they compliment each other, with the shade generally looking / feeling dominant. Sometimes, you just have to suck it and see...when in doubt, go for a bigger shade, and watch the magic happen.

The answer to this question is...that the 'best' shape is the one that works for you and your home! It all depends on your style, lamp base and the what works with the rest of your room decor.

Lampshades come in a variety of shapes, the most popular of which are:

Of course, there are so many more lampshade designs, including floral, pleated, square and scalloped forms. Wider bases and more ornate pieces, like scalloped shades, work well as ceiling shades where they have more room to breathe, while square lampshades work well as table lamps in tighter spaces because you can push them flush to the wall.

Try a few styles to see what works best - it can take time to find the right lampshade for a particular spot.

Generally, it's more aesthetically pleasing if the shape of the lampshade echoes that of the base. It creates a nice symmetry that's easy on the eye (you can see what we mean here). Again, it's down to personal taste, and where your new lampshade will live. If it's the kitchen, glass or metal works well as it's easy to clean and gives an ambient yet 'clean' light which is important in a functional space. Linen or cotton works well in living rooms, adding texture and tactility to your interior decor scheme, lending a warm, soft light. A velvet lampshade works brilliantly in the bedroom, giving luxurious, decadent vibes that are just right for your hideaway from the world. And we love how pleated fabric lampshades add personality to transitional spaces like the hallways and landings - give them a try and see if you like the effect as much as we do. Fabulous!

Yes! Many (although not all) of our lampshades are designed to be beautifully versatile, and can indeed be fitted to both table lamp bases and ceiling light fittings. If a lampshade works both ways, our photography will reflect that, meaning you can easily switch things up and style your lighting exactly as you like it. We love to geek out about lightbulbs! In this instance, we'd recommend using LED bulbs, as they stay cool, are energy-efficient and long-lasting. For the cosiest glow, opt for a warm white bulb (around 2700K). Always check the maximum wattage stated for your lamp and lampshade before fitting.
