Painting Ideas For Wooden Garden Furniture

When it comes to this time of year, there is nothing better than giving your garden a spruce up. And in particular, revamping your garden furniture. We have some wooden garden furniture paint ideas that we hope will inspire you to get the brushes out and give it a go.

Whether you are spray painting, using chalk paint, or going for a distressed effect, there are some key steps to take note of before painting your wooden furniture.

  1. Sand first - this is really important so as you get a smooth, dust-free base to paint on.
  2. Primer - You will most likely always need a primer. This is going to help the top colour to go on better with fewer coats, and will also give a richer finish.
  3. Paint your topcoat. Ideally, you will need to use outdoor eggshell, as this will weather better. But you can always use indoor eggshell if you intend to bring the furniture indoors each day.
  4. Varnish. This is always a good idea. The varnish will help seal the paint and avoid fading and scratches.

Vibrant

This year a big trend for your garden furniture is to go bright. Vibrant acid colours like Orange, Blue, and Pink are appearing all over Pinterest. Painting your garden furniture a bold bright colour will bring interest and joy into any garden. Influences from Morocco & Cuba will create the perfect backdrop to any garden soiree.

A quick and easy way to get some vibrancy into your garden is to use spray paint. If you have an old wicker chair, give it a new lease of life by spraying it a bright shade. Keep all the chairs the same colour, or go bold with some colour clashing.

Distressed

If your garden style is a bit more rustic/shabby chic, then you should consider trying a distressing effect on your wooden garden furniture. No need for a primer if you don't want to, as the look is going to be aged and the paint will be slightly chipped off by the end.

Start by rubbing down your piece of furniture, and then apply a coat of your chosen colour. In this instance, we advise a chalk paint. Once this has dried you need to apply a dark wax all over. Start by brushing it on gradually and then use an old rag to buff it.

Next up you need to grab yourself a scraper and start moving it along the edges and corners of the piece of furniture. Think about the areas it would naturally wear, and keep going until you get the look you want.

Finally, add a matte varnish. This will seal the wood and you will then be able to put it outside to enjoy. This is a great wooden garden furniture paint idea that everyone can try.

Black

Black furniture in a garden really makes a statement. Perfect if you like a monochrome look as you can mix it with white and paler tones. Choose a matte finish outdoor paint and go for it. For full impact paint the walls or fences around your furniture the same black, (or the decked floor if you have it) to give a seamless look. Accessorise with lighter colours and an outdoor rug like our fun Diamond Key Pattern Reversible Outdoor Garden Rug.

Black outdoor furniture creates a great contrast with the green foliage the garden brings with it and makes for more of dramatic space. Black is the perfect vase colour to add too. Bring pops of colour into your garden through soft furnishings and accessories.
