13 decor ideas for your master bedroom
1. Invest in your bed
Your bedroom is for sleeping and because we spend on average 26 years of our life in bed (yes, really) it's important to choose a great bed. Certainly, it's without a doubt that an inviting bed will make you feel more relaxed and at home in your bedroom. Plus, your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so it's got be great! As such, some of our favourite statement bed ideas include a Four Poster Bed, a bed with a fabulous headboard or a bed with soft velvet back. Whatever you choose, we highly recommend that you take your time considering your options, measuring up and if you need to save for that dream bed. You want your bed frame to last a lifetime, so take your time choosing.
2. Bedroom wall paint colours
Choose wall paint colours for your master bedroom that encourage relaxation and calmness. In our February Hot List 2020, we discussed how to improve your sleep and the colour of your walls play a big part in this. The key to choosing the right paint colour for your master bedroom is to opt for paints with warming undertones. This earthy pinks, deep navy and rich browns. These warming colours will cocoon you in your bedroom making you feel safe and comfortable. Perfect for a good nights sleep.
3. Statement ceilings aka the fifth wall
In our blog, Statement Ceiling Style Ideas we urged our blog reader to not neglect their ceilings! Often forgotten, painting or wallpapering your ceiling can have a dramatic impact on your master bedroom decor. So, if you love a bold and wild pattern then wallpaper is for you. Choose between animal print wallpapers, geometric wallpapers and punchy floral wallpapers too. The effect will be transformative on your bedroom, drawing the eye up as soon as you enter the room.
Alternatively, for those who prefer a more paired back look painting your ceilings is a great alternative. A firm favourite has got to be dark blue/black/grey paint on your ceilings. However, there is an assumption that dark painted ceilings can make rooms feel oppressive and smaller, for instance.
Practical yet beautiful a statement headboard can make quite the impression in your master bedroom. For an ultra grand look with added comfort a soft velvet headboard or chesterfield headboard bed if for you. These beds often come with under bed storage, an added bonus if you are short on space or have a small bedroom.
5. Statement chandelier
If an elegant and grand bedroom filled with drama is what you want then a statement chandelier is a must. However, the caveat to this is that single pendant lights can cast the room in a blanket of bright white light. Therefore, it's crucial that you get a qualified electrician to install a dimmer switch in your bedroom. This will stop the light washing your room in one blank colour, which is certainly not conducive to a good nights sleep!
Beautiful chandelier ideas include our Fabulous Feather Chandelier Featuring Chains - Juliette - Mustard Yellow, Shimmering Shell Disc Chandelier and Marla Beaded Chandelier White.
6. Bedside tables
Your nightstand needs to be practical containing all of your bedside essentials, but that doesn't mean it can't be beautiful too!
At Rockett St George we firmly believe that even your functional day-to-day pieces such as storage furniture can be beautiful and fit your home interiors too. So with that in mind, we always recommend that first things first you consider what you need. Do you need a drawer to hide away your lotions, potions, books, glasses and other bedside table essentials? Or, alternatively do you prefer a more minimal nightstand and thus a bedside table without hidden storage would be perfect for you? Once you've decided on what you need you can then look for something that fits your bedroom decor in that particular style. Some of our favourites include our Brass & Glass Bedside Table / Shelf (perfect for small bedrooms), Oriental Gloss Black Bedside Table and the Industrial Style Mango Wood Bedside Table.
7. Accent lighting
To create a cosy and relaxed mood in your bedroom, accent lighting is absolutely essential.
Great examples of accent lighting include wall lights, table lights and floor lamps. In fact, if you don't have a dimmer fitting for your central light then we would recommend never turning it on and sticking to your accent table and floor lights instead. For your bedside tables, we recommend the Crackle Glaze Oversized Ceramic Table Lamp With Linen Lamp Shade or the White Glass Globe Table Lamp With Black & Brass Base. Alternatively, if you are short on space why not use wall lights as your bedside table lights. It will create a hotel luxe feel in your bedroom which is hard to compete with. Some of our favourite bedroom wall lights include the Large Directional Wall Light With Sphere Wicker Shade and the White Glass Globe Wall Light.
To light up your bedroom chairs we recommend floor lights. Floor lights will create beautiful pockets of light over your reading nooks. Some of our favourites include the Fern Leaf Palm Tree Style Floor Lamp and the Beautiful Tassel Black & White Floor Lamp.
8. Occasional Chairs
Bedroom chairs or occasional chairs add that feeling of elegance and hotel luxe to your boudoir. Add a luxury velvet armchair and side table to the room - the perfect spot to relax with a book during the day or a cheeky scroll through Instagram! Alternatively, why not get a set? In our opinion, two is always better than one and it's particularly great for couples who can both sit and relax in a set of Lovers Chairs.
Top Tip - Occasional Chairs can become somewhat of a 'dumping ground' for items of clothing, books and towels. To avoid this, be sure to stock up on handy storage baskets and extra hangers.
9. Cushions, throws and rugs
If you are redecorating your master bedroom on a budget we highly recommend that you invest in great bedding. Linen bedding is great if you struggle to regulate your temperature at night and Egyptian cotton bedding is ideal for those who love super-soft sheets. Then adorn and embellish your bed with decorative cushions, cosy blankets and pretty throws. Some of our favourite cushions and throws include the Mono Pattern Tassel Throw, Dusky Pink Velvet Throw and the Leopard Love Velvet Cushion.
The finishing touch to a bedroom is always a lovely rug. Whether you choose a sheepskin rug or deep pile Berber rug there is nothing quite like the cosy feeling of a soft rug between your toes. Some of our favourites include the Genuine Sheepskin Rug - Silky White, Natural, Geo Diamond Print Rug and the Original Moroccan Berber Large Rug - Marrakesh.
10. Art & mirrors
Finally, mirrors and art is a fantastic decor idea for your master bedroom. Adorn your walls in giant artwork, photographs, typography and beautiful framed mirrors. It's a great way to add your unique stamp of individuality to your decor and it's also a brilliant alternative to wallpaper.
